The documents cover statements on foreign policy issued by the governments of East Germany and West Germany; a speech by the governing mayor of Berlin, Richard von Weizsäcker, following a state of the nation address by the West German chancellor, Helmut Schmidt; and the East German response to the new West German government under Helmut Kohl. Other documents in the file cover discussions with both East and West German officials on the state of inner-German relations; the activities of the Central Registry of State Judicial Administration in Salzgitter, which records defections and political crimes in East Germany; and a meeting of leading East German and West German officials at the funeral of the Soviet leader, Leonid Brezhnev. The file also covers West German payments to the East Berlin post office; the opening of the Berlin-Hamburg autobahn; British attitudes towards German reunification; and the tenth anniversary of the bilateral basic relations treaty.
