Soviet Union: ‘Refuseniks’ and Harassment against Jews in the Soviet Union

Subjects covered in the file include a severe decline in the rate of Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union; the deteriorating situation for Soviet Jews generally; the treatment given to the editor of Jews in the U.S.S.R., Nan Greifer; the involvement of the Foreign Office minister Malcolm Rifkind; Parliamentary Questions on the subject; and the non-delivery of letters and parcels from the United Kingdom to "refuseniks" in the Soviet Union. Documents in the file include letters and publicity materials from several British pressure groups; an interview with an American congressman, Elliott Levitas, on the subject; a draft European Parliament report entitled "On the Situation of the Jewish Community in the Soviet Union"; and a memorandum on the suppression of Jewish culture issued by the National Council for Soviet Jews.
