Soviet Union: ‘Refuseniks’ and Harassment against Jews in the Soviet Union

A file containing documents concerning the position of Jews in the Soviet Union. Subjects covered in the file include increased harassment of Jews attempting to emigrate; a deterioration in the situation since 1979; the strength of feeling on the subject in the United Kingdom; the confiscation of and delays to letters and parcels sent to Soviet Jews from abroad; and the attitude of the British government to the subject. Documents in the file include letters and publicity materials from several British pressure groups; a speech given by the Foreign Office minister Lord Trefgarne to the National Council for Soviet Jewry; lists of prominent Jewish dissidents and "refuseniks", as well as those involved in long-running visa disputes; a letter to the British prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, from a relative of a Jewish family unable to leave the Soviet Union; and an interview with the French president, François Mitterrand, on the subject.
