Eastern European and Soviet Department: East-West Economic Relations

A file of correspondence and reports concerning East-West economic relations. The documents cover the lifting of U.S. trade sanctions affecting the construction of a Siberian pipeline to bring gas to Western Europe; a tour of Western Europe undertaken by the U.S. Secretary of State, George Schultz, to discuss follow-up measures to the agreement that allowed the U.S. to lift the sanctions; and discussions on U.K. policy on the agreement, which included measures to ensure fair trade, to prevent the transfer of high-grade technology, and to control credit facilities available to the Soviet Union.
