Eastern European and Soviet Department: Soviet Attitude to the Falkland Islands Crisis

1 Jan 1982

A file of correspondence and reports concerning the Soviet attitude towards the Falklands War. The documents cover Soviet press articles on the conflict; Soviet reports that the British fleet carried nuclear weapons and that some had been lost following the sinking of H.M.S. Sheffield; Soviet press coverage of the impact of the dispute on U.S. relations with Latin America; and Soviet calls for decolonisation of the islands in advance of a U.N. debate. Other documents in the file include a brief on Soviet, Cuban, and East European reactions to the outcome of the Falklands War; and a NATO report on Argentinian-Soviet relations following the Falklands dispute. The file also discusses the Soviet attitude towards the establishment of a temporary protection zone and a fisheries limit around the islands; and a Parliamentary Question regarding discussions with Soviet representatives on krill fishing in the area.
