Eastern European and Soviet Department: Soviet Attitude to the Falkland Islands Crisis

1 Jan 1982

A file of correspondence and reports concerning the Soviet attitude to the Falklands War. The documents cover articles on the dispute published in the Soviet press and broadcast on Soviet media, which demonstrated a pro-Argentine stance, criticised threats of British military intervention, and condemned British military actions as a return to colonialism. Other documents in the file cover political and commercial relations between Argentina and the Soviet Union; the Soviet attitude to attempts at mediation by the U.S. Secretary of State, Alexander Haig; concerns that the Soviet Union may be providing military intelligence to Argentina; the nuclear trade between the Soviet Union and Argentina; and possible Cuban collusion in the dispute. The file also includes a copy of a statement on the dispute delivered by the U.K. representative to the United Nations; and discussions on the Soviet decision to abstain from voting on the issue.
