Poland: Dissidents in Poland

1 Jan 1979

A file of correspondence and reports concerning dissident activity in Poland. The documents include bimonthly reports on dissident activity in Poland, the Soviet Union, and other East European states, covering the arrest and trial of dissidents, the publication of samizdat material, and reports on East European dissidence in the Western press. Other documents in the file cover the work of the Polish "Flying University" group; the arrest of members of the group due to their involvement in private seminars; hunger strikes set up in Polish churches to protest trials of dissidents in Czechoslovakia; and events to mark the anniversary of the 1970 Polish riots. The file also includes a Canadian report on opposition groups in Poland; appeals on behalf of political prisoners held in Poland; and reports of a split in the Movement for the Defence of Human and Civil Rights, a Polish dissident group.
