Yugoslavia: Internal Political Situation in Yugoslavia

1971

A file containing documents relating to the domestic political situation in Yugoslavia. Subjects covered in the file include the complex relationships between the different nationalities, particularly between Serbs and Croats; a major political crisis over amendments to the constitution, which required firm action from the president, Josip Broz Tito; the appointment of a new twenty-two-member Federal Executive Committee; and rumours of Soviet troops massing on the borders of Yugoslavia. Other subjects discussed in the file include the replacement of Mitja Ribičič as prime minister by Džemal Bijedić; a months-long vacancy in the position of internal affairs minister; a political crisis in Croatia; and a dispute in Slovenia, referred to as "the action of the twenty-five deputies". Documents in the file include translated speeches by Tito; reports from the British embassy in Belgrade; and an organisation chart illustrating the new structure of the Yugoslav federal government.
