Slavery
Slavery and enslavement are both the state and the condition of being a slave, who is forbidden to quit their service for another person and is treated as property. Historically, enslavement was a typical outcome of military defeat, and a reason to join or support an army. Individuals, then, usually became slaves due to force, coercion of one sort or another, although there was voluntary slavery to pay a debt or obtain money for some purpose.
