A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: that the Italian Admiralty orders the maximum number of submarines and torpedo-boats to be made operational, on June 24; of the details of an Allied raid on Salonica, with the airfield having been badly damaged, on June 24; a German intelligence report for June 21, giving details of troop/units' movements and transfers in Croatia, Greece, Rhodes and Crete; from the Portuguese ambassador in London, a report of June 24 from the Portuguese Foreign Minister to the ambassador on the latest stand by Lisbon on the British request for use of the military facilities in the Azores, and that Lisbon considers much more negotiation necessary; and from the Japanese ambassador in Rome, a report of information given by Gayda to Kase on June 18 on Allied preparations for a new major offensive in the Mediterranean area, saying that Axis defence preparations in Sicily were adequate but assistance from the German Army was not yet considered satisfactory by the Italians, and that the Allies were concentrating their main strength in the Mediterranean area, so this would be a good time for Japan to strike at them in the Pacific and elsewhere.
