Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on the Mediterranean/Southern Europe: of tension in Athens after the Germans and Italians each shoot 10 Greek hostages in retaliation for an attempt to sabotage an Italian merchant vessel, on June 19; and that the German Navy requests Italian help in shipping tanks by landing craft from Salonika to Rhodes, on June 21; Naval Headlines; from the Portuguese ambassador in London, describing talks with Eden requesting Portuguese cooperation and the use of military facilities in the Azores, with written-in safeguards for Portugal including guaranteeing the integrity of Portuguese colonies - the ambassador considers that Portugal has no option but to agree to the British request; and a reply to the ambassador from Lisbon on June 22 stating that the initial reaction to the U.K.'s request was unfavourable but that discussion in the government was continuing, as of June 19.
