Northern (N): Soviet Union (NS). Political Relations: India

1966

A file of correspondence and speeches concerning relations between the Soviet Union and India. The documents discuss a visit to the Soviet Union by Kumaraswami Kamaraj, the chairman of the Indian National Congress, the largest political party in India; and the Soviet government's apparent uncertainty as to how to treat Kamaraj, before eventually determining that, regardless of his constitutional position, he was "a man of importance in India at the present moment". The documents also cover Kamaraj's visits to Dushanbe, Volgograd, and Leningrad; and Kamaraj's meetings with Aleksei Kosygin, the Soviet premier, and Leonid Brezhnev, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Other documents in the file include a transcript of a speech delivered by Kamaraj at an event held in his honour at the Kremlin.
