Western (W): General (W). Political Relations: GDR and Poland

1958

A file of correspondence and reports concerning a visit by an East German parliamentary delegation to Poland. The visit was led by the East German First Secretary, Walter Ulbricht, and included visits to factories, major cities, and receptions. A joint communiqué was published in the Polish press which discussed the current European situation, the successes of Soviet-bloc countries, the future of Germany, the Oder-Neisse frontier, the Baltic, and Berlin. Further commentary includes discussions on ideology and Soviet-bloc relations; the dangers of revisionism; the unity of the socialist camp; and Polish-East German relations. The file also includes translations of speeches made by Ulbricht and the Polish First Secretary, Władysław Gomułka, during the visit; and discussions on how the visit has failed to shed light on Soviet proposals for the future of Berlin.
