Northern (N): Soviet Union (NS). Political Relations between Soviet Union and South Africa

1956

A file of correspondence and press material concerning relations between the Soviet Union and South Africa. The documents contain two articles in The Manchester Guardian reporting on the expulsion of Soviet diplomatic staff from South Africa, with the South African government accusing the Soviet consulate-general of maintaining contacts with "subversive elements" in South Africa. The documents also cover the revelation that the South African government had been planning to expel the Soviet diplomatic staff for over a month before the notice of expulsion was served; and an attempt by the Dutch government to buy the former Soviet consulate-general in Pretoria. Other documents include a copy of the notice of expulsion served to the Soviet consulate-general in Pretoria; and a transcript of a broadcast on Soviet radio made two months in advance of the expulsion, which claimed that South Africa was the "centre of colonial oppression on the African continent".
