Documents in the file include telegrams from the British embassy in Budapest reporting on the progress of a Hungarian general strike; Hungarian government attempts to end the strike; and Hungarian army officers being made to sign statements supporting the Kádár regime. Issues discussed in the file include the United Nations' handling of the crisis, including a resolution about deportations to Siberia; the creation of a working group to consider the issue; and a visit to Budapest by the U.N. Secretary General. Other documents discussed include telegrams from the Hungarian government protesting the legitimacy of the U.N.'s involvement in Hungary; correspondence comparing the Hungary crisis and the British action in Greece following the Second World War; and a telegram from the Soviet government to Queen Elizabeth II, which the Soviet government accepted had been a mistake and had requested to withdraw.
