A file of reports and correspondence on the Bulgarian economy. The file contains quarterly reports on the progress of the state economic plan for the year 1955, expressing industrial production in terms of percentage fulfilment of the planned quotas; a decree lowering the prices of a number of goods, without affecting the price of staple foodstuffs; and a report compiled by the British and Israeli embassies in Sofia giving their estimate of the standard of living in Bulgaria. The file also discusses Bulgaria's continuing commitment to heavy industry at a time when most of the Soviet bloc was prioritising consumer goods and agriculture; the government's measures to increase the manpower available to co-operative farms; the proceedings of a conference on increasing productivity; and the completion of a large hydro-electric project.
