1 Jan 1979

A file of correspondence and reports concerning the annual review of Hungary for 1978. The report covers the current political situation and the continuation of the regime led by János Kádár; the continuation of policies of national reconciliation and economic reform; the observation of Warsaw Pact commitments; and Hungary's adherence to the foreign policies of the Soviet Union. Further commentary covers the expansion of Hungarian contacts with the West; a visit by Kádár to France; and renewed relations with China. The review also covers developments in the Hungarian economy; comments on the standard of living in Hungary; and Hungary's plans to raise industrial productivity and the export of goods for hard currency. Further information is provided on Anglo-Hungarian relations; visits to Hungary by two government ministers and the Duke of Edinburgh; an increase in British exports to Hungary; and the expansion of Anglo-Hungarian cultural relations. A calendar of notable events is also included in the review.
