Soviet Union: Report on Duty Tours to Soviet Union by Staff of the British Embassy, Moscow

1971

A file containing documents concerning reports of travels in the Soviet Union by British diplomats. The file includes a series of travel reports by British diplomats on official trips to the cities of Samarkand and Bukhara in Uzbekistan; Pyatigorsk, Orel, Volgograd, and Bryansk in Russia; Tbilisi in Georgia; and Donetsk and Kiev in Ukraine. In the travel reports, the diplomats recount their arrivals at the cities; their conversations with tour guides and members of the public; the monuments and sights that they visited; and their impressions of the people and politics in each city. The file also includes a note about Soviet officials "shadowing" British diplomats during their trips; a discussion of consumer shopping habits in the Russian city of Volgograd; and a record of a conversation between a British diplomat, the mayor of the Armenian city of Yerevan, and the Armenian foreign minister.
