Soviet Union: Naval Matters: Cancellation of Soviet Union Naval Visit to Portsmouth

1967

A file of correspondence and reports concerning the Soviet navy. The documents cover a proposed visit to Portsmouth by the Soviet destroyer Obraztsovy, accompanied by the Commander-in-Chief of the Baltic Fleet, Vladimir Mikhailin, which was later postponed. The visit was to have included meetings with British naval officers, a tour of London, and visits aboard British naval vessels. Soviet authorities cancelled the visit following concerns over the situation in the Middle East. The file also covers the activities of Soviet naval forces in the Mediterranean; a speech by Harlan Cleveland, the United States ambassador to NATO, titled "The Resurrection of NATO"; and press articles marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Soviet armed forces. Other topics covered in the file include the sighting of a Soviet submarine off Londonderry.
